Where to Retire in Thailand: 17 Places Compared

There is no single best place. Bangkok has the best hospitals and transport; Chiang Mai is cheaper and cooler but has the worst smoke from February to April; Hua Hin is calm with Bangkok in reach; Pattaya and Jomtien are good value with strong hospitals; Phuket and Samui have clean air but cost the most; Isaan cities such as Udon Thani and Khon Kaen are the cheapest. Check each place's air, flood history and hospitals before you choose.

Quick comparison: comfortable monthly budget

  • Bangkok (65,300 THB): best healthcare and transport, every community; traffic, heat and January to April smog.
  • Chiang Mai (53,300 THB): culture, cool season, big retiree scene; severe smoke February to April.
  • Hua Hin (59,700 THB): calm, milder air, Nordic and European base; no international flights.
  • Pattaya / Jomtien (62,600 THB): hospitals, clubs, value, near Bangkok; nightlife image and street flooding.
  • Phuket (69,600 THB): international flights and clean air; most expensive, car needed.
  • Koh Samui (73,000 THB): clean air all year; pricey flights, limited specialist care.
  • Udon Thani (45,500 THB) and Khon Kaen (51,300 THB): low cost, strong regional hospitals; heat in March and April.

Three things to check for any place

  1. Air. The north and much of Isaan have a burning season. The south and islands are the refuge.
  2. Floods. Hat Yai flooded badly in November 2025; Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai flooded in 2024. Avoid ground-floor homes in low areas.
  3. Hospitals. How far is the nearest private hospital with an emergency room, and how far is a specialist centre?

Questions people ask

What are the best places to retire peacefully, and which coast is better?

For calm: Hua Hin, Cha-am, Chiang Rai or Jomtien. The Gulf coast (Hua Hin, Samui) gets its heavy rain late in the year; the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is wet from May to October. Visit in both seasons.

Is the smog in Chiang Mai really serious?

Yes. In some years it has had the worst air of any major city in the world in March. Many Chiang Mai retirees spend February to April at the coast or abroad, and anyone with lung or heart disease should plan for that.
