Cost of Living for Retirees

A single retiree aged about 65 to 70 needs roughly 25,200 THB a month to live frugally in an Isaan city, about 53,300 THB for a comfortable life in Chiang Mai, and 65,300 THB in Bangkok. Islands cost more: 73,000 THB on Koh Samui. These are modelled budgets that include health insurance, which is the line most online budgets leave out.

How we build the budgets

Each budget starts with Numbeo's dated rent and price data for that city, adds a realistic food and transport pattern for someone in their late 60s, and includes health insurance at that age. Frugal means a local-style apartment and Thai food; comfortable means a decent condo, some Western food and a car or regular Grab rides; premium means a large condo or house, imported food and international insurance. Where data is thin we say so on the city page.

The lines people forget

  • Health insurance. It rises steeply with age. At 70 to 75, Thai-insurer premiums run 80,000-180,000 THB a year.
  • Locked visa money. The 800,000 THB deposit is money you can't spend, worth about USD 23,800.
  • Electricity. Air-con is the big bill: 1,500-2,800 THB a month is typical.
  • Flights home and the occasional emergency trip.
  • Exchange-rate swings. Budget with a 10% cushion.

Rent: one-bedroom flat, city centre

  • Bangkok: 22,748 THB
  • Chiang Mai: 15,580 THB
  • Hua Hin: 19,150 THB
  • Pattaya: 19,308 THB
  • Phuket: 24,467 THB
  • Udon Thani: 6,000 THB

Rents outside the centre are often far lower. Expect a deposit of 2 months plus one month in advance.

Questions people ask

Is EUR 1,400 (about 50,000 THB) a month enough to retire on?

Yes in most of Thailand outside the islands and central Bangkok, if your health insurance is affordable. It's tight in Phuket or Samui. Run your exact numbers in the calculator.

The baht is strong and my pension buys less every year. How do I plan for that?

Budget 10% below your current income, keep a cash buffer of a few months, and avoid locking yourself into rent you could only afford at today's exchange rate.

What's the cheapest place to retire in Thailand?

Isaan cities such as Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Korat, and small towns in the north. Cheap places have fewer English speakers and smaller expat communities, so weigh cost against support.
