Retiring in Thailand by Community
Your nationality changes your visa options, your pension and your tax, and your background shapes where you'll feel at home. Bangkok has every community; Pattaya and Hua Hin lean Western and Nordic; Sriracha is home to a large Japanese community; Phahurat in Bangkok is 'Little India'; halal food is easiest in Bangkok and the south. Pick your community below for the details that apply to you.

Why your nationality matters
- Visas. The 10-year O-X is only for AU, CA, DK, FI, FR, DE, IT, JP, NL, NO, SE, CH, GB, US. Some nationalities get fewer visa-free days or none.
- Income proof. The US, UK, Australian, Canadian, Danish and Norwegian embassies no longer write income letters for the visa, so you show 12 months of transfers instead.
- Pensions. US Social Security is exempt in Thailand; a UK State Pension is frozen and generally taxable in Thailand when remitted, with credit for UK tax; Canada's OAS needs 20 years of residence to keep paying abroad; Australia's Age Pension changes after 26 weeks away.
- Tax treaties. There is no treaty with KE, NG, BR, MX and most of Africa except ZA, MU, SC, so tax paid at home can't be credited here.
The community pages
Each page covers where people live, food and shops, places of worship, clubs, visa and pension notes, creators who share your background, and the gaps we're still filling.
Thais moving within Thailand
Thais retiring to a new province skip the visa rules but face the same choices on housing, hospitals and care. Move your house registration, update your hospital registration under the gold-card scheme, and look at senior housing such as Sawangkanives (Thai Red Cross).
